Community Entry Over!



Finally! MY 33 month stint of no internet and communication is over! From this point on I will be able to update at least once at month, hopefully twice a month since Im allowed to use the provincial house.   Which means internet, electricity, and hot water! Crazy!

As for vill life Ive been super busy.  Ive dug at least 7 ponds, and surveyed probably double that. Dosent sound like a lot but it really it.  The building of ponds includes survey and site visit, dig visits, and composting/water visits that can take weeks.

Other than pond digging Ive been digging my own garden around my house, working on funding for the agriculture co-op here, talking to the ministry of health, getting to know the area better, and really just strat digging ponds and talking to farmers who are interested  in ponds.

As for those of you who havent heard I have a new man in my life.  Hees blonde with a black face, amber eyes, we go everywhere together, and he likes to snuggle alot.  His name is Mojo.  And heres a photo montage to him and my farmers.

    We all miss you like crazy! We loved your letters! Your Pictures are amazing. I can't believe how much work you have gotten done there! I brag about you all the time and share your stories. I hope your adventure continues to be amazing!

First is the worst.

Day 1 was just a big train wreck.  Just when I thought I had everything under control and I was ready for this, I get to the airport with my mom and Rodgers and I could not stop crying.  The poor people going through security with me.  This display was followed by delays and cancellations all over my airport, luckily my flight was not cancelled just delayed an hour, but we were loaded onto the plane and then sat on the runway for another hour because of excessive fog.   Needless to say I was late to orientation, but so was half the group. I guess we were all riding the strugglebus today. My PC group consists 43 volunteers, or trainees since we are not technically volunteers yet,  between the ages of 23 and 65.  Its pretty 50/50 with regards to gender and our homes range from every part of the country possible.  Although there were a surprising number of people from green bay/milwaukee  (go pack go!).  My boyfriend also hails from the land of green and gold and will be addressed as R

PICTURES!

OK finally I am posting pictures.  I am sorry for the delay. Us waiting at the airport at 3 am. Awesome.... Central Providence, Zambia.  This is the area Ive spent the last 3 months in.  My room with my host family.   The gang, playing cards and goofing off.  Managing a fish pond. super groody.  We found a chameleon, which locals are afraid of and think they are bad juju.  Heres one of the rivers in Northern Providence, where Ill be living for the next  2 years  My counterpart, Ba Ernest.  This is the river right next to my village, maybe a 10 min walk and the marsh area where Ill be working/building ponds.  Us hanging out at the bar after classes.  Ulupwa yandi mu Zambia.  Or at the least most of the family I was staying with.  About 10 of the kids are missing.

Two years in review and new beginnings

    Its hard to believe that my time in Zambia is coming to a close, in some respects I remember that plane ride to Philly so well (there was snow and ice, my plane got delayed 3 times, I almost missed the new boarding time, I was so freaked out I would never make it to Philadelphia and Peace Corps would fly to Africa without me).  Then there are moments where I have to laugh because that all seems like eons ago I even have a hard time relating to myself from 2 years ago; 23 years of age, excited, idealist, naive, terrified, much cleaner.  Its safe to say that the Garrett returning home is not the same girl who left. And Im OK with that.      As for what Ive done here, in terms of numbers, my village has 16 new fish farmers, over 40 new ponds, over 2,000 fingerlings stocked, painted the old clinic, built 2 complete houses for staff, taught 200 teenage boys how to use a condom properly and safely, provided a mini clinic from my hut, started Girls Leading Our World (GLOW), regi
